The year is more than half way over, is it turning out the way you had hoped? If you made a New Year’s resolution for 2011, how is it going? What about your goals for this year, are you accomplishing them? Is it time to get motivated and make a commitment to you?
I often hear people say things like, “I am just not motivated to exercise” or “I am never in the mood to write that book I have always wanted to write” or “I don’t have time to cook”. These are all true feelings that people have, and they often wish they didn’t feel that way. However, it often comes down to making a commitment to yourself in order to get motivated to work out, write a book or start cooking more.
When you make a commitment to someone else you probably follow through with it most of the time. So why, when it comes to ourselves do we often fall short? Is it time for you to make a serious commitment to yourself so that you are motivated to accomplish those New Year’s resolutions or goals? You still have time to do it this year, if you choose to make a commitment to yourself.
8 Steps to make the commitment to YOU
1. Give yourself some quiet time to think about what you want to accomplish the rest of this year.
2. List it out on a piece of paper. Write it down.
3. Prioritize what is most important to you.
4. Decide. Pick 1-3 of your goals to focus on.
5. Write down your top goals and post them by your computer, or on your mirror in your bathroom. Put them in strategic places to remind you of what you want for yourself.
6. Commit. Commit to taking steps to achieve these goals. If you don’t make the commitment then it is unlikely you’re going to make it a priority in your life.
7. Start today. Take 1 step today and then keep going. Schedule it, make the appointment to write, to cook or to exercise or whatever you goal might be. Would you blow off time scheduled with a friend? Probably not, so don’t blow off the time you schedule for you to work on what you want for yourself.
8. Believe. Believe you can do it.
If you still think you will be unmotivated to move forward, then you might consider partnering with a friend or family member to hold you accountable. Maybe they have the same goal and you can work together and support each other. Another option is to hire someone to help hold you accountable. Hire a trainer or a coach to keep you moving forward. These are all ways to keep your commitment to yourself and move forward on accomplishing your goals.
Ideas to stay motivated:
• Read a book about someone that has achieved what you want to achieve. Often times, you will find it inspiring and it will help to keep you motivated.
• Google positive and empowering quotes and then read and post them in your house or office. If one really inspires you, print it off and frame it.
• Visualize accomplishing your goal. Let your body feel the joy of reaching your goal. Do this frequently and watch it become a reality. This reminds me of a Napoleon Hill quote, “Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve.” Try visualizing before you get out of bed in the morning, while in the shower, or right before you fall asleep at night.
Make the commitment to yourself and you will start to feel the motivation within you and you will propel forward. You just have to commit to you!
